FISHERMEN PARTICIPATING in this year's Oistins Fish Festival will be rewarded for their catch of fish.
Thanks to Chefette Restaurants, proud sponsors of the festival since 1986, fishermen copping the most poundage of fish will receive monetary prizes in what is expected to be a keenly fought battle in the Catch of the Season competition.
The prizes will be as follows: First place fisherman with the heaviest weight in fish will receive $800 and a trophy; the fisherman with the second heaviest weight will receive $500,
and the one with the third heaviest weight will receive $400.
In addition, Chefette will continue to reward the winners of the fish-boning competition. The first prize winner will receive a trophy and $1 400 in cash, while the second and third place winners will receive $1 000 and $500, respectively.
This increase investment in the Oistins Fish Festival by Chefette has been lauded by Chairman of the Festival Organising Committee, Dan Carter.
"Mainly responsible for the sustainability of the competition is the financial support it has received from Chefette Restaurants over the years. The festival is grateful to Chefette for its interest in the festival, and in the fish-boning competition in particular. Monetary prizes will be presented to the boat owners who have caught the most poundage of fish throughout the fishing season. The fishermen will be happy to hear this, since they felt they were the ones responsible for providing the fish in the first instance," Carter disclosed.
He added that as a corporate body contributing to the development of Oistins, the Oistins Committee thanked Chefette for its support. Carter encouraged persons in the other fishing villages to participate in the fish-boning competition.
In response, Advertising Manager of Chefette Restaurants Limited, Lisa Carter said: "We depend a lot on the fishing industry to supply us with dolphins and other fish. Without them we would not be successful in offering specials like the Dolphin Pak. Our sponsoring the Fish-Boning and Catch of the Season competitions is one of the ways of showing appreciation to this industry."
It was in December 1985 that Chefette established its presence in the quiet, quaint, fishing community of Oistins with the opening of a branch there. The long awaited opening of this Chefette outlet with its famous broasted chicken and rotis and wide choice menu, generated an increase in commercial activity to this area which is known to all as "Oistins Town".
