Fishermen who worked on the 20 boats to ferry 58 loads of necessities to Grenada in the wake of Hurricane Ivan are the latest recipients of the Rommell Primus Award For Bravery And Human Kindness.
The opening ceremony of the Oistins Fish Festival with the overhead fish, provided the perfect backdrop for the presentation of the annual award on Monday, 28th March 2005.
With the intoxicating smells of grilled fish, mixed with popcorn and Barbadian dishes filling the air, president of the Barbados National Union of Fisherfolk Organisations Angela Watson stepped forward to receive the award.
President of The Nation Publishing Company Harold Hoyte lauded the efforts of the fishermen who braved the sea to complete this humanitarian effort.
“This award has come to the Oistins Fish Festival to recognise the unselfish effort of the fisherfolk who in September 2004 took 58 loads of food stuff to Grenada hit by Hurricane Ivan,” Hoyte said.
He added that many believed that fishermen were hard-hearted and almost without feeling, but their actions demonstrated they did have feelings. |
