SKYROCKETING COSTS forced cutbacks on activities at this year's Oistins Fish Festival, which opened on Saturday, 22nd March 2008.
Junior Walron, deputy chairman of the festival committee, said they had spent more than $85 000 to put on the event.
"The costs come from providing health services, the electricity and other utilities and services; the Red Cross and CERO [Department of Emergency Management] must be onboard, so those were the costs that we have to cater for," Walron said.
Costs skyrocketed this year "mainly because
we did not have our main sponsor, the Barbados
National Oil Company Limited (BNOCL)," he said, adding, "so this year our main source of revenue came from stall space and from Banks (Barbados) Breweries, who is the leading sponsor this year."
The contract between the festival and BNOCL covered much of the costs during the last three years of sponsorship, which ended last year.
Because of the lack of funds, Walron said, the committee had to eliminate the usual week of activities leading up to the festival, including performances from community groups as well as the showcasing of steelbands and skits from surrounding schools.
The Oistins Fish Festival continued on Saturday, 22nd March, Sunday 23rd March and , Easter Monday, 24th March 2008
